What is CBCT and what is it used for?
CBCT is a high-resolution 3D dental CT that produces extremely detailed images of the jawbones and tissues with low radiation dose. It enables more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning across dentistry.
Benefits of CBCT
- Low radiation dose. Cone-beam CT focuses X-rays on a small area, so exposure is significantly lower than conventional medical CT. We also use a lead apron for added protection. For context, the dose is roughly comparable to a 3-hour flight from natural background radiation.
- Fast & comfortable. The scan takes 10–40 seconds. The unit is open-fronted, which patients who dislike enclosed spaces find more comfortable than a tube-style CT.
- Precise, distortion-free images. CBCT delivers sub-millimetre accuracy, ideal for dental implants, orthodontics, and other procedures. We can image the full dentition or a small field of view for a single tooth region.
- Early detection. 3D imaging helps identify problems in teeth, bone and soft tissues at an early stage, supporting timely treatment and fewer complications.

Before tooth extraction (incl. wisdom teeth)
We assess the exact position of roots in the jaw—especially for impacted wisdom teeth—when a panoramic X-ray is not sufficient.

Before root canal treatment
Complex, curved canals and nearby nerves are visualised in 3D. CBCT also helps locate missed canals in previously treated teeth that may be a source of chronic infection.

Dental implant planning & placement
We determine the optimal implant position, angle and bone volume and decide whether bone grafting is needed. A surgical guide can be designed from the scan.

Infection-focus assessment (“focal infection”)
CBCT helps pinpoint hidden oral infection sources—such as inflamed root tips or chronic gum infections—that may not show on 2D panoramic images.

Sinus-related issues (odontogenic sinusitis)
CBCT visualises sinus anatomy and any pathology, and is invaluable for sinus surgery/lift planning.
How a CBCT exam works
- Remove metal objects. Earrings, piercings, necklaces, glasses and other head/neck items must be taken off.
- Lead apron. We place a protective apron over the chest and back.
- Scanning. Our clinician positions your head and explains each step. Keep still for 10–40 seconds; you can close your eyes for comfort.
- Digital delivery. The 3D scan is available immediately and can be sent securely to your treating dentist or to you via e-mail/drive.
- Pregnancy: Because CBCT uses ionising radiation, we generally defer scans during pregnancy unless the clinical benefits clearly outweigh the risks. After pregnancy and breastfeeding, the scan can be performed as usual.
Why choose CBCT over a panoramic X-ray?
Panoramic X-rays are 2D and can suffer from overlapping structures and distortion. CBCT provides true 3D, distortion-free imaging with far more diagnostic information—so treatments can be planned and executed with greater accuracy.
